Dallas locks in TE2 Brevyn Spann-Ford through 2029

Dallas has agreed to an extension with tight end Brevyn Spann-Ford that keeps him under contract through 2029. The team announced the agreement Thursday, three days before its season opener, and identified him as the No. 2 tight end behind Jake Ferguson.

The timing matters. Spann-Ford was scheduled to become a restricted free agent after the 2026 season. Dallas chose to settle the relationship before a full season could change either the player's leverage or the club's view of the position.

The deal also gives the Cowboys continuity in work that rarely stands out in a fantasy box score. The team's announcement described Spann-Ford as one of its best in-line blockers and a contributor on special teams. Dallas said his receiving work has improved, but it did not disclose contract value, guarantees, signing bonus, annual cap charges or incentives.

Without those figures, the salary-cap effect cannot be measured. An extension through 2029 shows that Dallas wants to keep the player. It does not show how much cap space the team committed or how easily it could move on later. Those conclusions have to wait for filed terms.

The depth chart offers a clearer takeaway. Dallas now has Ferguson and Spann-Ford positioned as its top pair for the next several seasons. Luke Schoonmaker entered 2026 in the final year of his rookie contract, according to the team's earlier position review. Spann-Ford's extension makes Schoonmaker's usage and next contract more consequential, even though it does not push him off the current roster.

For RSO managers, the contract supports job security more than fantasy volume. A TE2 who blocks and plays special teams can hold a valuable NFL role without becoming a dependable fantasy starter. Routes, targets and red-zone use will provide the missing evidence once Dallas plays.

The next two checks are straightforward: the contract structure and Dallas's use of two-tight-end sets. Regular routes beside Ferguson would point to a broader offensive assignment. Work concentrated in blocking and special teams would leave Spann-Ford's dynasty value tied to contingent opportunity. Dallas has made its personnel preference clear. The season will show whether that preference produces touches.
