Titans replace a waiver claim with 29-start cornerback Jaylon Jones

Tennessee signed cornerback Jaylon Jones to its 53-man roster Thursday and waived defensive back Melvin Smith Jr. The move came 10 days after the Titans claimed Smith from Kansas City, making it a direct revision to their initial roster rather than a practice-squad shuffle.

Jones arrives with more NFL evidence than a typical opening-week addition. Indianapolis drafted him in the seventh round in 2023, and he appeared in 44 games with 29 starts over three seasons. He started all 17 games in 2024 and has recorded 162 tackles, two interceptions and 21 passes defensed. The Colts waived him Tuesday, allowing Tennessee to add him without a trade.

The Titans did not announce an immediate starting job, so the transaction should not be stretched into a depth-chart promotion. Jones does bring a different experience profile to the final defensive-back spot. He is listed at 6-foot-2 and 203 pounds and has nearly two full seasons of starts.

Smith's brief stay is part of the story. Tennessee claimed him on August 31, then released him before the opener. Late waiver claims often function as live evaluations. A club can decide quickly that another available player offers a better fit, especially when roster movement accelerates before Week 1.

For IDP and deep-roster managers, patience is appropriate. Jones has enough starting history to matter if Tennessee gives him defensive snaps, but a 53-man signing alone does not guarantee fantasy production. Track his game-day status, special-teams work and placement behind the Titans' established corners. Defensive snaps would make the addition actionable; inactive status would make him experienced insurance.

The transaction also illustrates why the opening 53 should never be treated as permanent. Tennessee revised one evaluation as soon as a more experienced option became available. Jones now has to show that his 29 starts translate into a role with a new defense.

The first official depth chart and Week 1 snap count will show whether Jones is immediate defensive help or experienced depth.
