Vikings name Carson Wentz their Week 1 backup quarterback

Carson Wentz will be Minnesota's backup quarterback for Sunday's opener against Green Bay, with J.J. McCarthy third behind starter Kyler Murray. Coach Kevin O'Connell announced the order Wednesday, and the Vikings' published Week 1 depth chart lists Wentz ahead of McCarthy.

O'Connell described the backup assignment as a week-to-week decision, according to NFL.com's Kevin Patra. The coach pointed to Wentz's experience and ability to prepare with limited repetitions while Minnesota concentrates its practice work on getting Murray ready.

That qualification matters. Wentz has the immediate backup assignment for the opener; O'Connell has left room to revisit it. He also said Minnesota would continue working with McCarthy and could change the order when the younger quarterback was ready to provide the better option with limited practice reps.

For RSO managers, our read is that the announcement changes the short-term insurance question. If your roster plan assumed McCarthy was the first replacement behind Murray, that assumption needs updating before Week 1. Wentz now occupies that role.

The longer-term contract decision still depends on your league. Compare the remaining term, roster space and cost of holding a developmental quarterback with the value of an immediate backup. This announcement alone does not establish that McCarthy should be released or that Wentz deserves a multi-year commitment.

Murray remains the starter. The next useful checks are Minnesota's game-day availability and any subsequent announcement from O'Connell about the backup order. Keep the Week 1 depth chart attached to the week it describes rather than treating it as a permanent promise.
