Hall exits Jets loss with thigh injury, putting Allen next in line

Breece Hall's availability became the Jets' next roster question after he left Sunday's 31-24 loss at Detroit with a thigh injury. The Jets announced that he was out for the rest of the game. The NFL's Sunday injury tracker independently records Hall as ruled out. Neither source gives a diagnosis, recovery timetable or Week 4 designation.

Hall was hurt on New York's opening drive of the fourth quarter. Field Level Media reported that he was tackled for no gain on second-and-goal at the Detroit 4 and grabbed at his right outer thigh and hip area. Braelon Allen replaced him. Hall had 13 carries for 32 yards and three catches for 23 yards when he exited. The official ESPN final box score records the Jets' 31-24 defeat and Allen with four carries for 14 yards and three catches for 3 yards.

The in-game substitution makes Allen the first back to watch if Hall cannot practice this week. It does not confirm that Allen will start against Chicago, receive Hall's full workload or inherit every passing-down snap. New York still has time to evaluate Hall and decide how to use its backfield before its Week 4 trip to the Bears. The Jets' schedule lists that game for October 4.

Hall's role is difficult to replace with a straight carry-for-carry swap. He handled 13 rushing attempts before leaving and caught all three passes directed his way. Allen's three receptions Sunday show he can be used as a receiver, but they were worth only three yards; one game is too small a sample to assign him Hall's entire rushing and receiving role. New York also must account for the game situation: it was chasing Detroit late when Hall left.

Hall said after the game that he felt something while running, according to CBS Sports' account of New York Post reporting. That is useful context, not a medical conclusion. Hall was ruled out Sunday, Allen filled in, and the Jets have not yet stated how long the thigh issue will affect their depth chart.
