Minnesota lost its top receiver after the opening drive in Tampa. Sunday’s out designation does not establish his availability for the next game.

Justin Jefferson was ruled out of Minnesota’s Week 3 game at Tampa Bay on Sunday with an ankle injury, turning what began as Kyler Murray’s return to the Vikings lineup into another test for the passing game. Jefferson caught two passes for 32 yards on Minnesota’s opening possession before leaving the field. The Vikings first called him questionable to return, then downgraded him to out later in the game. The team’s game-day update establishes only his status for Sunday; it does not describe the injury’s severity or set a timetable for his next appearance.
The sequence matters for fantasy managers and roster decisions. Jefferson was involved immediately, drawing both of his recorded targets on the opening drive. He went to the sideline medical tent and later walked to the locker room, according to Associated Press reporting. ESPN’s live game data listed him out with an ankle injury during the fourth quarter. That designation confirms he would not return against the Buccaneers; it is not a designation for Minnesota’s next game.
Minnesota had other receivers active, but Sunday’s target distribution cannot by itself tell managers who would replace Jefferson if he were to miss more time. Jordan Addison drew work after Jefferson exited, while Jauan Jennings and Tai Felton were also available in the receiver rotation. Tight end T.J. Hockenson remains another passing option. The game gives a first look at how Murray and the Vikings responded during Jefferson’s absence, not a reliable projection of future target shares. No longer-term absence or roster move follows from the Sunday game designation alone.

The useful next checkpoint is Minnesota’s first practice report for its next matchup, followed by the team’s final game-status report and inactive list. Those reports can separate a one-game exit from an injury that changes the next lineup. Until then, managers should record Jefferson’s Sunday exit, keep Addison and the other active pass catchers in view, and avoid treating an unconfirmed recovery timeline as fact.
