Kaelon Black's 15 touches turn the 49ers backfield into a roster decision

Kaelon Black received 15 offensive touches in San Francisco's 27-7 season-opening win over the Rams, giving RSO managers a concrete first look at how the 49ers divided work behind and alongside Christian McCaffrey.

The official 49ers box score credits Black with 14 carries for 65 yards and one reception for five yards. McCaffrey recorded 10 carries for 68 yards and caught five passes for 20 yards. Black led the team in rushing attempts, while McCaffrey finished with more yards from scrimmage and far more receiving work.

The split matters, but so does the game. San Francisco held the ball for 33:50, outgained Los Angeles 379-290 and led 17-7 entering the fourth quarter before adding 10 more points. A comfortable second half can create carries that disappear in a close game.

Fourteen carries in an NFL debut still carry more weight than a preseason depth-chart label. Black averaged 4.6 yards per carry, and his longest gain was 14 yards, so one breakaway did not inflate the total. San Francisco trusted him with steady rushing work instead of saving him for an emergency.

The team's official highlight package shows the game Black entered and the offense around him. It is useful context for the favorable script, although it is not a substitute for individual snap data.

McCaffrey's five catches remain the clearest separation. He also handled 15 total touches, produced 88 yards from scrimmage and stayed involved in the passing game. Black caught his only listed reception for five yards. The opener supports a complementary rushing role for Black; it does not establish an even split in the touches that tend to matter most for fantasy scoring.

Black is now a credible bench target where he is available, especially for managers protecting a McCaffrey investment or carrying an open developmental spot. One game does not make him a weekly starter, and another 14-carry day should not be assumed whenever San Francisco is favored.

Week 2 will be more revealing if the score stays close. Track Black's first-half snaps, two-minute work, third downs and red-zone touches. Early carries would support standalone value. Work concentrated after San Francisco builds a lead would keep his value closer to game flow and McCaffrey insurance.

Black has moved from preseason possibility to the active watch list. The next usage split will determine how much a manager should spend to get him.
