Mike Onwenu lands on injured reserve as Patriots reset their offensive line

The New England Patriots placed Mike Onwenu on injured reserve Tuesday, turning a short-term offensive-line concern into a roster absence that will last at least four games. The Patriots' official announcement also moved punter Mitch Wishnowsky from the practice squad to the 53-man roster and signed tight end Tanner Conner to the practice squad.

Coach Mike Vrabel said Monday that Onwenu hurt his ankle and would not be available in the short term. He did not call the injury season-ending and said the club would provide more information if the timeline changed. The subsequent IR move establishes the next four-game minimum under league rules, but it does not by itself supply a return date.

Onwenu's absence creates a starting-lineup question at a premium blocking position, and the replacement may affect both pass protection and the Patriots' ability to stay efficient on early downs. Managers with Patriots skill players should not overreact to the IR designation by benching every New England option. The better adjustment is to lower expectations for sustained drives until the line settles, then watch whether the Patriots use extra tight-end help or quicker concepts. Opposing defenses may test the replacement immediately, especially on obvious passing downs.

Onwenu remains a hold in dynasty formats because the team has not announced a season-ending diagnosis.
