Panthers rule Devin Lloyd out, putting defensive calls in new hands at Cleveland

Carolina will face Cleveland on Sunday without the linebacker who has been directing its defense. The Panthers' final Week 3 injury report lists Devin Lloyd out with a calf injury after he did not practice Wednesday, Thursday or Friday. It is a confirmed game designation, not a projection about how many additional weeks he might miss.

The timing is sharp for a defense that leaned on Lloyd in its 34-3 win at Atlanta last Sunday. He finished that game and earned NFC defensive player of the week honors before appearing on this week's injury report. Carolina's account of the win credited him with eight tackles, a sack, two tackles for loss and a pass defended in the first half alone. The team has given no return date for his calf injury.

Replacing Lloyd is also a communication job. In a Panthers team report Wednesday, Bobby Okereke and Tyrel Dodson described practicing with the helmet receivers used to relay defensive calls. Both joined Carolina near the end of August. That preparation gives the staff alternatives for the green-dot assignment, but the club has not announced which player will wear it Sunday or how it will divide Lloyd's snaps.

The injury report shows more losses in the same unit. Safety Nick Scott and reserve linebacker Claudin Cherelus are out after missing all three practices. The team reported that Lathan Ransom filled in when Scott left the Atlanta game. Outside linebacker Jaelan Phillips returned to full practice by Friday and has no game designation, avoiding another confirmed absence. Those are different personnel decisions: Phillips' improvement does not undo the need to replace Lloyd and Scott.

Carolina's receiver picture remains unsettled as well. Jalen Coker, with an ankle injury, and Xavier Legette, with a knee injury, are questionable after both were limited Friday.
