Rays blank Phillies 2-0 behind five-pitcher shutout

Tampa Bay scored in each of the first two innings Friday and made those runs stand in a 2-0 win at Philadelphia. The official MLB game feed shows Jonny DeLuca's first-inning RBI single and Nick Fortes's solo homer in the second as the game's only scoring plays. MLB's same-game video highlights Fortes's swing.

Junior Caminero scored on DeLuca's single to right in the first. Fortes then drove his sixth homer of the season to left in the second. Those early runs came against Cristopher Sánchez, who settled in and gave Philadelphia seven innings with 10 strikeouts. He allowed only the two runs, but the Phillies' offense never provided a response.

Freddy Peralta started for the Rays and worked 5⅓ scoreless innings. His line in the final MLB box score shows four strikeouts and no runs, and he was credited with the win. Cam Booser finished the sixth, Kevin Kelly took the seventh, Cole Sulser handled the eighth, and Bryan Baker closed the ninth for the save. The five Tampa Bay pitchers held Philadelphia scoreless through all nine innings.

The late innings left the Phillies with chances to change the result, but no scoring play followed either early Tampa Bay run. In the ninth, Baker retired Alec Bohm on a liner to right, Bryson Stott on a foul fly to left and Bryan De La Cruz on a fly to right. The final three outs completed a shutout built from Peralta's start and four separate relief appearances.

Philadelphia's staff gave the club room to answer. Jhoan Duran and Tim Mayza each followed Sánchez with a scoreless inning, so the Rays did not add to their second-inning lead. The margin stayed at two runs for seven innings. Tampa Bay's early RBI single and solo homer, followed by nine scoreless defensive innings, decided the opener of the clubs' final regular-season series.
