Chris Bell and Caleb Douglas will start Miami's season opener

Chris Bell and Caleb Douglas will start for the Dolphins in Sunday's season opener, coach Jeff Hafley said Wednesday. Miami's two rookie receivers enter Week 1 with an immediate opportunity to establish themselves, and Hafley said there is no planned snap limit for Bell.

In the team's published press-conference transcript, Hafley said the rookies had earned their starting assignments. He described winning as the reason for the decision and said Miami would identify their development needs as they played.

Bell's workload remains worth watching. Hafley said the staff would see how he felt during the game, while confirming there was no preset pitch count. That leaves room for an in-game adjustment; it does not establish how many routes or targets Bell will receive.

Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald reported that Bell, Douglas and Malik Washington occupy the starting spots in Miami's three-receiver alignment. Jackson identified Jalen Tolbert as Bell's primary backup, Ryan Miller behind Douglas and rookie Kevin Coleman Jr. behind Washington in the slot. Those distinctions matter when evaluating which players compete for the same opportunities.

For RSO managers, the useful change is a clearer path to early playing time for both rookies. Our view: check each player's existing league contract and your available roster space before making a move. A starting designation can justify closer attention without settling a player's season-long value.

The first game should sharpen that evaluation. Watch whether Bell and Douglas stay on the field in passing situations, which receivers play when Miami uses fewer than three wideouts, and whether either rookie earns repeated targets. Separate those observations from the box-score total: one long catch can lift a fantasy score while leaving the underlying role uncertain.

Hafley's announcement establishes the opening assignment. Sustained usage will provide the next evidence for a longer-term roster decision.
