  • The Giants are adding J.J. McCarthy to a quarterback room forced into a midseason reset by Jaxson Dart's knee injury. Minnesota announced Monday that it had agreed to trade the former first-round pick to New York for a fifth-round selection in the 2027 draft. The deal is pending McCarthy's physical, according to the Associated Press; that condition matters until the transaction is complete.

Dart had surgery after his Week 2 injury and is expected to miss at least the rest of the regular season. Jameis Winston started New York's 12-7 win over Tennessee on Sunday. The Associated Press reported that coach John Harbaugh said afterward Winston would start again against Arizona next Sunday. That leaves McCarthy as a new option rather than an announced Week 4 starter.

McCarthy was selected No. 10 overall by the Vikings in 2024. A preseason knee injury cost him his rookie season. In ten starts last year, he completed 57.6 percent of his passes for 1,632 yards, 11 touchdowns and 12 interceptions, according to the NFL. Minnesota turned to Kyler Murray this season and kept Carson Wentz ahead of McCarthy in its quarterback order. McCarthy had been the emergency third quarterback to open 2026.

  • For New York's front office, a future fifth-round pick buys a look at a 23-year-old quarterback who still has first-round pedigree and regular-season starting experience. It does not solve the immediate question of how quickly he can learn the Giants' offense or whether Winston will retain the job as Dart recovers. New York also promoted Jake Haener to its active roster before Sunday's game, so the team now has multiple healthy quarterbacks to sort through.

The return is also a clear change of direction for Minnesota: a first-round investment has become a later-round future pick while Murray holds the starting job. The NFL reported that the move would remove roughly $4.5 million from the Vikings' books. That is the league's estimate, not a disclosed cash payment in the trade.

Dynasty managers can treat McCarthy as a new opportunity to monitor, but the deal alone does not promise snaps or a useful fantasy role. Winston is the named immediate starter, Dart remains part of the Giants' long-term quarterback picture, and McCarthy's availability first depends on the physical and roster processing. The next official depth chart and Harbaugh's comments will tell readers more than the trade price does.
