Joey Porter Jr. remains a Week 3 roster hold as contract talks recede

  • Joey Porter Jr. says he expects to play for Pittsburgh this season, but he still cannot say whether that return will come Sunday against Cincinnati. The Steelers' Thursday report listed the cornerback as a limited participant Wednesday and Thursday, with his practice designation marked as not injury related/conditioning. Asked Thursday if he was ready to play this week, Porter said he did not know. The club has not assigned him a final game status.

That is a narrower update than either a holdout story or a return announcement. Porter has not played in either of Pittsburgh's first two games. NFL.com reported that a persistent back problem kept him out of training camp and that he is still building football conditioning after time on the physically unable to perform list. Porter said his back can flare up and conditioning remains part of the process. Coach Mike McCarthy said Porter's Wednesday work met the staff's plan.

Porter also addressed the contract question that has followed his absence. He said the extension he wanted did not happen, denied asking for a trade and described the failed deal as old news for him. Those comments do not settle his future beyond the current season. He is in the last year of his rookie contract, and the club has announced neither an extension nor a trade. For now, the actionable development is his practice progression and the pending Week 3 designation.

  • In an RSO league with individual defensive players, managers holding Porter should check their own lineup and roster settings before reacting. Pittsburgh has not declared him out for Sunday, so a replacement may be needed only for this week. RSO's published rules allow commissioners to set injured-reserve capacity, and a standard RSO IR placement keeps a player there for the rest of the season. Some leagues enable a designated-for-return option with separate eligibility rules. Moving Porter to a season-long fantasy IR spot while the team is still testing his readiness could close off a useful roster choice.

The Bengals matchup makes the timing matter, but it does not provide a reliable snap forecast. Porter said he is ramping up, not that he is ready for a full game. Managers should use Pittsburgh's Friday report and eventual inactive list to decide whether he can occupy an active IDP slot. The contract impasse is background; the next roster decision turns on whether the Steelers clear him to play and how much work he gets when he returns.
