Pittman limited, Dowdle sidelined as Steelers open Bengals week

Pittsburgh opened its week of preparation for Cincinnati with two important offensive availability questions. Receiver Michael Pittman Jr. returned to practice on a limited basis Wednesday after missing the Patriots game with a foot injury. Running back Rico Dowdle, who left that game early with a toe injury, did not practice. Neither Wednesday participation status decides who will play Sunday.

Coach Mike McCarthy said Pittman's current foot issue is separate from the one that affected him during training camp. The Steelers reported progress before Wednesday's session, but McCarthy said earlier in the week that he did not yet have a feel for Pittman's game availability. A limited practice is a step forward from his absence last week, with Thursday and Friday reports still to come.

Dowdle's path is less clear after a missed session. He started against New England and gained 22 yards on seven carries before leaving. Jaylen Warren had 43 yards on 11 carries in that game, while practice-squad elevation Travis Homer added 16 yards on two. Offensive coordinator Brian Angelichio said the staff was comfortable with its backfield options but expected to learn more about Dowdle through the treatment and practice week. The team has not named a replacement starter or issued a Sunday designation.

The first report also listed Warren as limited with a shoulder injury. Cornerback Jamel Dean did not practice because of an ankle injury, while Joey Porter Jr. was limited for conditioning. Jalen Ramsey's absence was listed as rest, so it should not be read as a new injury. Those distinctions matter before treating a Wednesday list as a Sunday depth chart.

The opponent has its own availability issue. Pittsburgh's report lists Bengals receiver Andrei Iosivas as a Wednesday nonparticipant with a thumb injury, and the Steelers' account says he is headed to injured reserve. The final status of Pittsburgh's offensive group will depend on subsequent reports, not on Cincinnati's separate roster move.

For roster planning, the actionable signal is the split between Pittman's limited return and Dowdle's missed opening practice. Friday's official game designations, and any later transaction, will provide a firmer answer for the AFC North matchup. Pittsburgh hosts Cincinnati on Sunday.
